A submittal in construction is a series of documents, drawings, samples or product data that is furnished by the contractors to the architects or the engineers to be approved before the commencement of work. It also makes sure that the appropriate systems and materials are applied in accordance to the project specification. Submittals assist in checks of compliance, elimination of mistakes, and quality. These are shop drawings, material data sheets and mock-ups. In case proper submittals have not been done, it may result into expensive errors which may lead to time delays in the project. Submittals therefore contribute towards a great extent in coordinating and communicating among all parties involved in a building project.
